ABRA

The 5th Workshop on
"Affect and Behaviour Related Assistance "

Workshop Theme and Goals

The fifth workshop of this kind will continue the interesting debate of ideas and solutions for supporting people in their daily environment with technologies respecting and taking into account cognitive, emotional, and behavioral aspects of the person.

Reaching further, we want to expand the discussion from mainly home-based support systems to business applications and mobile solutions, opening many more possibilities for support and assistance of people in their daily life.

Persons in need of such assistance technologies are not only elderly people, but also or maybe even more those persons who need to balance work, family, and care for elderly relatives.

To provide assistance that really supports a person in a specific situation and context requires novel techniques for detecting situations in which assistance or attention is needed. Information need to be collected from many different sources like sensors or the Internet. Fusion and integration techniques as well as reasoning and visualization technologies for this new blend of data are required to allow for comprehensive solutions.

This workshop wants to provide a platform for researchers and product developers alike to exchange and propose new ideas, discuss novel technologies and approaches, and not least to show latest developments and project results.

Topics of Interest

We particularly solicit contributions on the following subjects:
  • Non-obtrusive monitoring and analysis of activity, well-being, mental state
  • Ambient/mobile assistance in private life, for health care and therapy
  • Ambient/mobile assistance for business processes and documentation
  • Inclusion of social networking aspects
  • Serious games for affect and behaviour related assistance
  • Methods for visualizing activity and mental states
  • Assistive robots in the home and health context
  • Novel interaction methods tailored to the elderly
  • Studies on elderly and their attitudes to and interaction with technology

SN2AE

Workshop on
"Social networks and sensor networks in assistive environments "

Workshop Theme and Goals

Several assistive applications are characterized by a network structure, such as sensor networks, networks of patients or doctors, networks of assistive technologies. Characterizing the structure of such networks is critical in many assistive applications. Existing methods in the areas of social networks and sensor network analysis aim to detect, analyze, and summarize interesting or surprising components and trends in the network. The main focus of this workshop is on data mining and machine learning methods for characterizing social networks in assistive applications. Special focus will be given on sensor networks that are quite present in such applications.

This workshop will provide a forum for discussions around assistive environments and the analysis of measurements from the assistive environments with techniques normally used for social network analysis or analysis of sensor network measurements. Contributions should emphasize the benefits achieved when using the network and its structure in providing a solution. Preliminary research results are also welcome as contributions to this workshop.

Topics of Interest

We are interested in original papers, case studies, or just preliminary results on describing advances in all areas of social networks and sensor network measurement analysis related to assistive environments, including but not limited to:
  • Community mining in assistive technologies
  • Data mining and machine learning methods for network characterization
  • Sensor network measurement analysis
  • Social network analysis
  • Influence maximization techniques in assistive environments
  • Network dynamics in assistive applications
  • Graph summarization and mining
  • Wireless sensor network analysis
  • Sensor-based systems and applications
  • Network architectures
  • Topology control
  • Intelligent sensor nodes

DAT

Tutorial:
"Disability and Assistive Technologies : Let the experts tell us how to select, adjust and evaluate technologies for persons with severe physical disabilities"

Theme and Goals

The workshop will include a brief survey of evaluation methods, how to set goals, types of intervention and re-assessment when using physical positioning infrastructure for seating. It will also include an overview of how to choose, evaluate and implement assistive technologies, selection of appropriate devices, access methods and adjustments that need to be made to personalize the seating and positioning of persons with severe physical disabilities in order to increase their functioning status.

Instructors: Artemis Drosou and George Filippou. Both Ms. Drosou and Mr. Filippou have more than 15 years of experience in the treatment of children with physical disabilities and they are trained in the neurodevelopmental treatment ( NDT- Bobath) approach. This is a 3 hour workshop by top experts in the field of occupational and physical therapy. The workshop will provide insights into the different special characteristics and needs of people with severe physical disabilities. What type of assistive technologies are appropriate for the different levels and types of physical disability? What are the physical and psychological limitations that need to be overcome for effective treatment? What are the most popular therapeutic approaches that are used and "work" to address such disability needs in our current society? How do we educate family members and the work environment of these persons?

PSPAE

The 4th Workshop on
"Privacy and Security in Pervasive Environments "

Workshop Theme and Goals

Pervasive computing pushes forward a vision where technology is integrated into everyday objects with the intent of facilitating the life of humans and making their interaction with the surrounding environment simpler. A critical element of pervasive and ambient intelligence environments is awareness: computing environments become aware of the activities of their users and a lot of their daily activities can be captured and recorded for future use. The users frequently ignore the amount of their personal data being collected and processed or shared wirelessly and how much their privacy may be invaded. An understanding of privacy in the domain of pervasive computing and learning to address privacy concerns is very critical. Ensuring the security and privacy of users'data is a critical prerequisite to creating public trust for pervasive environments. It is therefore, necessary for such environments to be designed, implemented and used in compliance with data subjects' fundamental rights while the adoption of specific safeguards is required. In addition, since misuse of collected data is easily enabled, preventive measures are needed.

Privacy-Enhancing Technology (PET) concepts have been developed and applied while guidelines are found in the literature on how to deal with data so that the application of pervasive technology to become privacy-friendly. However, using privacy enabling and enhancing tools is not always easy. Pervasive computing environments are based on the use of wireless devices that have limited processing power, bandwidth, throughput, memory etc. These factors put a resource limitation on implementing resource demanding tools and protocols for privacy protection. Additionally, legal support for widespread use of PETs is missing and the introduction of additional legislation should be examined.

Topics of Interest

We are interested in original papers and case studies describing advances in all areas of assistive technologies for physical, occupational therapy and rehabilitation, including but not limited to:
  • Privacy, security and trust in the design of pervasive and ambient intelligence environments
  • Ethical issues of Ambient Intelligence
  • Ethical guidelines for the design of pervasive and ambient intelligence environments
  • User and/or usability/user experience studies related to the design of pervasive and ambient intelligence environments
  • Policies and practices for access, authentication, authorization and auditing in pervasive and ambient environments
  • Policies for information sharing in pervasive environments
  • User and context awareness in pervasive computing and ambient intelligent environments
  • Access Control enforcement, authentication and secure data access in pervasive environments
  • Encryption, cryptographic techniques to ensure privacy and security in pervasive environments
  • Case studies in respect to privacy and security in pervasive environments
  • Developing secure pervasive/ambient infrastructures
